Students in the Construction and Industrial Safety course recently had the opportunity to learn from two industry professionals, Rick Keen, CSP, OHST, and Ken Clemons, ASP, who presented on Emergency Action Planning.

Mr. Keen and Mr. Clemons, both members of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) – Acadiana Chapter, shared valuable insights drawn from their extensive field experience, emphasizing the importance of proactive planning and preparedness applicable in many industries, including construction, manufacturing, and oil and gas. The ASSP Acadiana Chapter has partnered with the Engineering and Technology Management Department (ENGT) and the new ASSP Student Chapter in the College of Engineering at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, helping connect students with practicing safety professionals and expanding real-world learning opportunities.

Reflecting on their visit, Mr. Keen shared, “We continue mentoring the current and future leaders of work daily. We look forward to these engagements and welcome questions from all regarding our experiences. We want to present a professional message and take time to orient your students to the real world they will experience. We want the students to step out from this time of learning on the best footing.”

During the session, Mr. Keen discussed several industry case studies, illustrating how comprehensive emergency action plans can prevent serious incidents and protect both workers and assets. Mr. Clemons highlighted the importance of having emergency exit routes established not only at job sites but also at home, to ensure quick and safe responses in dangerous situations.

This guest lecture was part of the Construction and Manufacturing Management concentrations within the Engineering and Technology Management Department at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, reinforcing the program’s commitment to integrating real-world industry perspectives into classroom learning.
